About Kensal Green.

Largely agricultural until the mid-1800s, it was in the 1930s that many of the semidetached houses and flats in Kensal Green were built, and considered to have the best housing layouts in the borough at the time. Branded as slum-like for many years, it wasn’t until the 1970s and 80s with immigration of African-Caribbean people and middle-class professionals, that the seeds of change were planted.

Now Kensal Green is home to a high proportion of residents working in media and culture, with renowned musicians, actors and film directors based in the area. There’s also a growing French community thanks to the opening of a French Lycée in Brent.

Many of the houses form part of the original terraces and tend to have high ceilings and a wealth of period features. Wide open spaces include Little Wormwood Scrubs, Kensington Memorial Park and Queen’s Park, or you can join the Kensal Green section of Grand Union Canal (the longest canal route in England) for an urban cycle.

Home to two well-known cemeteries; Kensal Green Cemetery is the one of the oldest burial grounds in the city, and just next to it, St Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Both host many notable personalities including politicians, authors, spies and sportsmen as well as one (of two) working coffin lifts still used in England.
